Steve Sherman picked his first camera up as a 13-year-old surf/skate rat heavily influenced by the gritty black-and-white images he saw in Skateboarder Magazine, taken by Craig Stecyk. Sherman grew up in skating and surfing at the Del Mar, and as a standout at the Del Mar Skate Ranch, was added to the pro team by G&S Skateboards. Throughout the 1980s, Steve worked as a darkroom developer at TransWorld SKATEboarding, and went on to direct two films for Powell/Peralta. Sherm switched his focus from skate to surf in the 1990s and took on the role of photo editor at TransWorld SURF, then Surfing Magazine. These days, Sherman is an in-demand photographer known for his imagery of a vast array of subjects. Sherman’s photos have become as iconic as the man himself. Sherm can be found at the front lines of surf-photography, always going the extra mile to “get the shot” usually wearing combat boots and one of his trademark hats.
This exclusive “Graveyard” mini-cruiser features the now iconic image of a perfect wave breaking just off the beach from a surfer-made, surfboard graveyard shot during a once-in-a-lifetime south swell in October of 2003.
